Chanel advertisment: Now and Then

For one of my tasks, I have been asked to compare two advertisement, and of course I looked after Chanel, I hope you enjoy and write about what you think.

The CHANEL NO 5 advertisment of the 1958 VOGUE issue can be described in one word: elegant. There was no need of a model just the product shining by itself was enough. Plus the name of the brand which captures the attention with the tipography in bold. And, of course, the slogan “The most treasured name in perfume”, sure it is! But this is in a smaller tipography. I also want to add that I found this advertisment in two sizes: whole page and 1/3 page.

CHANEL4

In this October 2014 VOGUE issue, I found “COCO MADEMOISELLE” advertisement, which I can also describe as  elegant. These advertisement is two pages, page one shows the bottle of the perfume plus the name, that´s it, no need of a slogan and also it seems like the bottle shines by itself. “COCO MADEMOISELLE” typography captures the attention in informal typography.  On the second page, Keira Knightley shows security, glamour, power and this bohemian air which intrigues us. And I can say the whole advertisement is sober, even the colors used: whites, pastels and grey.

COCOmadeimoselle

About similarities, the description of the advertisement remains the same, still being ELEGANT, and something we would like to buy. The brand is so strong, there´s no need of writing “CHANEL”, we know the product so it speaks by itself, always has and always will.

The differences that I want to mention…  “COCO MADEIMOSELLE” has a different informal typography, it´s flowing and relaxed like the model is, following a bohemian “pattern” but in a powerful and glamorous way.

On the other side, we just can´t compare a black and white picture with a colorful one but we can say if both were colorful or black and white, they would look elegant. Also they are different products even though I am comparing the same brand.

CHANEL1 COCOvintage

There was no CHANEL NO. 5 in this month´s issue, but we can remember and mention the last CHANEL NO. 5 campaign´s showing quite similar arguments: the classic and timeless elegance contained in a perfume bottle. Audrey, actress who played COCO CHANEL, shows off elegance and freedom. And Brad Pitt reminds us there is a reason why this ICONIC perfume, introduced in 1921, has been the most sold perfume in the world.
